A recent alarming trend has hit Twitter: people announcing that they hate their faces, using the #IHateMyFace and #IHateMyBody hashtags. There are two reasons why people would share hating their face with the world: because they genuinely hate their faces and/or they are hoping for a compliment. Either way these tweets are coming from a place of insecurity. Yesterday, all kinds of people tweeted about the #IHateMyFace trend, including people who meant it and attached photos, people who wanted to talk about the trend and those who mocked the trend. Regardless of the initial reason for tweeting along with #IHateMyFace, this action is promoting low self-esteem amongst young people, who make up a large community on Twitter. This fad is showing us we have a real problem. It is both disturbing and sad that young people on social media are following this pessimistic movement. These tweets are a cry for help, and while it is healthy for people to want to express their feelings, speaking about insecurities on such a public forum like Twitter just encourages bullying and harassment. Twitter is not a place for the spirit to heal. Reverse the trend – love your face.

How to Plan a Flash Dance Mob

When everyone is super busy at the office working away, rushing from one printer to the other, answering phones calls, and scrambling to finish last-minute reports, it’s the best time to take 2 minutes out [...]

When everyone is super busy at the office working away, rushing from one printer to the other, answering phones calls, and scrambling to finish last-minute reports, it’s the best time to take 2 minutes out of everyone’s busy schedule and break into a flash dance mob! This of course takes a lot of organization, planning and co-ordination. Instead of dreaming of this fantasy to come to life, here are 7 steps to planning your flash dance mob to perform in any public place when you are in the weeds:

1. Understand the purpose of a flash mob. A flash mob is about performance. It’s beauty is in the spontaneity of the dance creating confusion and entertainment for the audience. Its purpose is simply the dance itself. A flash mob is not a time to sell things and it is not an excuse for violence.

2. Decide on a performance for your flash mob occasion. The success of a flash mob event is dependent on the originality and liveliness of the dance. Look for inspiration from your favourite artists. Watch previous flash mob events on YouTube for inspiration. This will give you ideas about how to have your people interact and how the dance will come together. Being unique is most important – do not copy a flash mob event that has been performed in the past. You can choose to use 1 song or a mix of many, allowing you to blend different types of dance.

3. Gather your troops! Find all the office heroes who are willing to participate in your performance. If you are short on performers, invite others from your social media networks to participate along with you. Flash dance mobs can be performed with any number of people, but try to aim for at least 50-75 – the more people you have, the greater impact your dance will have.

3. Bring it on! Plan the steps and have a few team leaders start teaching them to others in small groups. Provide clear instructions to your performers so that they know their role in interacting with the other performers. The success of your flash mob event will depend on everyone knowing exactly what to do. Timing and execution are crucial, so practice, practice, practice!

4. Know the limitations of your location. Do a safety check of the area you want to perform in. There may be physical or legal limitations on what can be done in the space. To avoid getting into trouble, it’s important not to create unsafe obstructions.

5. Hold a Dress Rehearsal. Once everyone knows what they are doing, you can start rehearsing as a big group in a large space that simulates the location of your performance. This way you can see the whole dance come together. Arrange any props or costumes needed. It is best to use simple clothes and props that people are likely to already have in their wardrobe or house.

6. Hire a few good cameramen. Have some people film your flash mob since it is a one-time only event! Throw your video on YouTube! Make sure to get the dance from all angles. The video will capture the mood of the crowd and the synchronization of the dance so that you know what to improve on for your next event.

7. Let go! Trust that everything will be fine and your flash mob will go according to plan. Perform your dance and then vanish into the crowd as if nothing ever happened.

Researchers at the University of Bergen (UiB) in Norway have recently identified a new subdivision of internet addiction. They came up with six signs that indicate that one may be addicted to the social media giant, Facebook. They have developed a new test, called the Bergen Facebook Addiction Scale, to help figure out if people suffer from this addiction. All signs in the test are scored on the following scale: (1) Very rarely (2) Rarely (3) Sometimes (4) Often and (5) Very often.
The signs are:
• You spend a lot of time thinking about Facebook or plan use of Facebook.
• You feel an urge to use Facebook more and more.
• You use Facebook to forget about personal problems.
• You have tried to cut down on the use of Facebook without success.
• You become restless or troubled if you are prohibited from using Facebook.
• You use Facebook so much that it has had a negative impact on your job/studies.

So how addicted to Facebook are you?

In the world of marketing, we can target people based on preferences and interests. However we can also divide people by psychological type to know how to speak to their preferences and behaviours. Most people are a combination of psychological types, but knowing which types they are help us determine how to communicate with them.

A sensing type pays attention to information perceived by the senses, and an Intuitive type likes to examine the possibilities beyond what it is in from of him/her. The sensing type is practical and likes details, facts and immediate applications. But the Intuitive type enjoys metaphors, far-fetched ideas.

The Perceptive type focuses on what’s in his/her environment, while the Judging type prefers to draw conclusions about it. When talking to a perceptive person, describe situations rather than evaluating them. Give the perceptive type time to consider all the options. But do the opposite for the judging type – narrow your focus and options.

A thinking type judges on whether something is true or false, while a Feeling type judges on whether it’s good or bad. So we know we must give the Thinking type honest, frank and logical feedback while staying detached. But when responding to the Feeling type, it is best to take the time to develop rapport and be careful not to critique or challenge him/her.

The Extrovert Consumer focuses on people, and the Introvert focuses on ideas and concepts. In communicating with Extraverts, let them know you’re listening and communicate with enthusiasm and humour. Introverts are the toughest to talk to because they do not like to give out a lot of personal information. Wait for them to take their time to trust the brand and respond to your questions. Do not be imposing or expect immediate responses.

Whatever product you are trying to sell, request you are putting through, question you are trying to answer, or concern you are mending, look for little clues that can help you understand what type of person you are speaking to. It will help you give an answer that your consumer is satisfied with.

What would you do if you had an extra hour in the day? Would you use this extra time to reflect, take a walk, read a book or relax? Would you use it for catching up on work or cleaning up your home? Would you spend more time with your family? Would you be more active, pick up a new hobby or join a new gym class? Would you host a party or cook up a healthy meal? Would you write the next bestseller? Would you take a nap? There is so much that can be done in 60 minutes.

Are you trying to get the attention of tech-savvy 18-to-34-year-olds? Gamification is your answer. Before you start creating games, outline the desired behaviors you want from consumers and figure out how you’re going to monitor progress. Here are some steps to get you started:

1. Choose Your Transparency
Decide if you want your app to actually feel like a game for your customers or if you would rather use hidden game mechanics that make your target not realize why the experience is so compelling.

2. Keep it Short
Complex games draw you into an experience by giving you the minimal amount of information you need to proceed to the next clear step. Keep your game around the sixty-second mark to ensure players don’t drop off before it’s finished.

3. Add a Call to Action
Once you have a player hooked on your game, it’s a great time to gain more followers. Use your game as an opportunity to get your consumers to opt into email or make a purchase.

4. Give Incentive
Give your fans a reason to play your game and earn rewards. The more they engage, the bigger the rewards. By making the consumers earn the coupons, discounts or points to redeem they get a feeling of accomplishment and also have a reason to keep playing.

Happy gaming!

1. Innovate. Don’t be afraid to try something new to test the reaction.
2. It’s not enough just to have social media accounts, you must actively use them to connect with your fans.
3. Know your social media strategy and keep it consistent. Since social media is ‘social’ your team should participate in it and collaborate to make it a fun and positive experience.
4. Likes are not a measure of success. Your like count means very little if you are not effective at engaging your fans and taking action.
5. Spread the word. Give your audience something they want to talk about and they will return the favour by sharing it on their walls.
6. Give before you get. You want to give your audience information that is of value to them – give them thoughts, ideas, and tweets worth re-tweeting. That way they will pay closer attention to what you have to say.
7. Figure out your customer’s dream and sell it to them. On social media you should move beyond selling the product itself, but rather what it represents for your audience – awe, connection, belonging, fun and happiness.
8. Measure your success. Examine your goals carefully and figure out how you will measure progress.
Now you know the rules so you too can become a social media expert!

Whether you sit at a desk, drive a truck, work construction, develop funky programs, lecture or serve coffee for a living, chances are you enjoy some tunes to brighten your day. How much does your job have to do with the type of music you listen to? If your job is stressful it helps to listen to ambient, relaxing beats. If you need to concentrate on your work, try classical or rhythmic beats. And if you drive around you have the great advantage of being able to blast any type of music as loud as you want all day!

If you’re feeling a little flooded with all of the information in the Facebook insights, and are wondering what exactly all of the numbers mean, here is a quick breakdown to help you understand some key Facebook metrics.

1 People Talking About This – This is the weekly total of people who have engaged with your Page in any way (Liking it, commenting on or sharing a post, answering a question, tagging your Page, or responding to an event). Right below this number there is also a percentage increase or decrease so you can compare your current number to last week’s engagement.

2 Engaged Users - Underneath the weekly stats graph, the column called “Engaged Users” represents the number of unique people that have clicked anywhere on that post. If you click on this number, a pie chart will pop showing you the types of clicks on the post, so it gives you an idea of how many people are really paying attention, even if they don’t comment or click Like.

3 External Referrers – If you click on Reach and scroll down to find “External Referrers” you’ll see a list of external sites along with the number of times people arrived at your Facebook Page from that site. This will show you where and how people are finding your brand online.

Good luck with Insights!
